The Roller Coaster Begins

Well here we go, this is when the "ride" begins. For the past four days everything has been relatively going well. The Doctors and Nurses called it the "honeymoon" period, where everything will seem fine and dandy. Then the babies finally realize that they are no longer in mommy's tummy and start acting up.

Joscel started out pretty rough with an infection and some blood clots in her head. After several ultrasounds, x-rays, and medication, things have settled down a bit and she's now doing alright.

Joshua on the other hand seemed to have it all together in the beginning. And tonight on the 5th day, at around 10:30pm he needed to get an emergency surgery. Throughout the day, he had some complications with his stomach. His intestines have started leaking and caused a lot of weird things. So as a result, they needed to move the two lines from his belly button into his arms. They then attached a tube onto his intestine and out of his belly so that his excriments will go through that. He is stable now, but hard to say how he will handle that post-opt.

Both of them still have a murmur in their chest, indicating that their PDA have not closed yet, causing fluids to accumulate in their chest. They have been taking medication to try to close it, but have not reacted positively to it. Some of which resulted to Joshua's condition. Joscel is in line to get a surgery to clip the vessel shut, and Joshua is to follow when he recovers from his recent surgery.

It's all a lot to take in, and we are trying to make sense of all that we are being told. So if my explanations don't make any sense, I'm sorry, but you'll have to read some books. Cey and I have been reading a lot of the materials available to us, but often times we just want to spend the time staring at them and hold a hand or foot.

I'll try to keep this blog up to date, but with all that going on, I can't promise to be too detailed and consistent with these posts. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you all for you love, support and prayers. We know that God is in control, and He makes no mistakes.

thanks for the update- thinking about you lots and lots. It's amazing the things they can do to help such tiny little babies isn't it... I'm sure it is very scary and hard to see all that is done to them. Thanks for taking time out to let us know how they are doing- I'm sure you could think of other things to do with your time...like SLEEP!
Love to you 4, Erin

I wondered how the result of the x-ray turned out since the nurse had mentioned that his tummy was distended and they would watch it. :(

We'll be thinking of you while we're away, and of course, checking your blog. Love you guys.

hey guys,
it breaks my heart to know what these little ones are going through but i know that God is in control just like he was in control when our little Asia was sick. You know I love you both and my lil niece and nephew. Im so silly..im crying as Im writing and reading the encouragements and prayers from friends and family. Im finally an Aunt and if only I could take away their pain and give them strength I would. They are like my own, I love them so much already and I would do anything and everything I can for them. Im only a phone call away. Please give them my love when I cant make it in to see them. Take care. Love you all

Hi Joseph and Cey. I have been keep you and the children in my prayers. I don't know if this a comfort to you - with my job I code charts after patients have been discharged from the hospital. I have coded newborn charts that were born prematurely like Joshua and Joscel - like you have already mentioned they have their bumps along the road like having to have PDA ligation (used the clip to close the ductus artery) - but they are discharged with their parents (like you mentioned in your previous blog entry - a few months later). Joscel and Joshua are little fighters - they have the strength, prayers and love from you both, family members and friends. Of course, they have God's strength and healing hands surround them as well as you both. Take care Joseph and Cey. Laura Jean

Hi folks,
We're friends of Amy & Garron Rish, who emailed us about your sweet little ones. We too unexpectedly went into labour with our twins, Joshua and Jonah. They were born at 23 1/2 weeks. Josh lived for 2 days and Jonah for 30 days before they went to Heaven. We too learned quickly the culture of the NICU and read whatever we could get our hands on to learn about what was going on with our sons. Jonah required PDA ligation and also had NEC.

We spent much time just reading stories to the boys, so they could hear our voices.

Please let us know how we can be helpful to you. We will be praying for you both and your sweet Joscel and Joshua. Please feel free to email us (lcgomes@shaw.ca).

Blessings,
Lezlie & Jon Gomes
